Local Missions

The Board of Outreach reviews and makes decisions about requests for financial support from our Church. They educate the congregation about opportunities for our involvment. The Outreach Board promises special offerings including the four major ones for the greater United Church of Christ, as well as local offerings. Our church has been generous in its support of missions both locally and globally.

Other projects that are close to the church’s heart are:

Crop Walk – CROP stands for “Communities Responding to Overcome Poverty”. Hosted by First Congregational Church-UCC to raise awareness and money to fight hunger and poverty in our community and our world. 25% of all money raised by this event was divided equally between the Food Pantry and the Neighborhood Table. The rest was used by Church World Service in its global efforts to overcome poverty and hunger.

Neighborhood Table – The purpose of The Neighborhood Table is to reduce hunger in our community, improve quality of life for our residents and create an awareness of needs that exist right here in our community. The Neighborhood Table is a non-profit, charitable organization, staffed by a core of volunteers who provide free meals to anyone in need. They serve every Thursday of each month from 4:30 to 6:00 p.m. at United Methodist Church.

Habitat for Humanity(HFH) - The Habitat for Hum is a nonprofit, nondenominational, Christian-based housing organization. They work with the local community to build simple, decent, affordable housing for those who lack adequate shelter. Families are selected on criteria stated on an application. Volunteer hours or “sweat equity” make the house affordable, not free. Each family makes regular monthly mortgage payments at zero interest to HFH. This organization meets regularly at our church and has multiple members of our congregation serve on the Board of Directors.

Food Pantry – The Food Pantry is Sponsored by South Wood Emerging Pantry Shelf (S.W.E.P.S.) and is located at 331 - 12th Ave S, Wisconsin Rapids. The Pantry is staffed by 17 area churches. Volunteers provide food to families determined to be in need. The Pantry is supported by this church as well as 17 other churches with food donations. Some churches have ongoing collections, but donations tend to decrease during the summer months. The pantry benefits from organized drives, such as those conducted by postal workers, Boy Scouts and the Ho-Chunk casino.

Prayer Shawl Ministry – “Shawls…made for centuries, universal and embracing, symbolic of an inclusive, unconditionally loving God. They wrap, enfold, comfort, cover, give solace, mother, hug, shelter, and beautify. Those who have received these shawls have been uplifted and affirmed, as if given wings to fly above their troubles….” (Janet Bistrow, 1998, when she started the prayer shawl ministry). At our church, anybody is encouraged to make prayer shawls to donate to the shawl ministry. As people are in need of a shawl lovingly and prayerfully made, the gift is passed to them.
